Art Form(s):Artist Statement
The arts are important for children to grow into individuals whose lives are filled with imagination, vitality, and purpose. A teacher is at her/his core an artist. Teaching demands the rigor of discipline that every art form requires for one to achieve success.
Developmental theory impacts my view of working with children. I ask myself a question many times before beginning a project, during a project, and when I assess the project: “Is this developmentally appropriate?” I have learned from working at wonderful emergent-curriculum-based schools that curriculum starts with the child’s interests and questions. The teacher must listen closely to the words and actions of the child and follow the child’s lead.
Artist Bio
Rebecca Kelly is a multidisciplinary artist. She is a storyteller, textile and book artist, and curator. Her students’ Book Arts work was exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum’s Learning through Art Exhibition, and Rebecca curated the traveling exhibition of the award winning Bucks County Community College ARTMOBILE: transFORMations; Making Art with Recycled and Reused Materials. Rebecca is an experienced educator and holds a Master’s Degree in Child Development from Sarah Lawrence College.
