Rhythm World (Music)

In this assembly, percussionist Senfu Stoney and other world-class musicians teach students about varied instruments and diverse cultures around the world. Students learn the proper technique and coordination for numerous drums, explore the drum’s role as a revered healing instrument, and learn of its history as one of the first means of communication for humans.


Afro-Brazilian Cultural Center (Dance & Movement)
Assembly: The ensemble brings the rich African-influenced rhythms and dances originating in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, a region known for customs deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of ancestral Africa.

Garden State Percussion Trio (Music)
Garden State Percussion Trio demonstrates a variety of percussion instruments including drums that play rhythms to xylophones that play melodies. Children discover that anything you can hit, shake or scrape can be a percussion instrument.

Hector Morales (Music)
Workshops and assemblies available that focus on percussion. These programs immerse participants to in the rhythmical magic of the cajón (box drum) and become acquainted with its fascinating history.

Jeannine Osayande & Dunya Performing Arts Company (Dance & Movement)
DunyaPAC’s artistic, aesthetic, and philosophical approaches pull heavily from African traditions, such as polycentrism and polyrhythms.

Josh Robinson (Music)
Drumming can be used as a tool to teach an array of life skills. It provides a positive and creative outlet for young people to express themselves and release their emotions in a safe space.

Mary Knysh (Music)
Her programs create accessible and fun opportunities for students and teachers to discover, explore, and learn about the world and, more importantly, about themselves, through the exploration of world musical styles, ethnic instruments, and music improvisation.

Poetry Meets Percussion (Literary Arts, Music)
This energetic and engaging assembly introduces students to how rhythms and spoken word can awaken their inner artists. Students connect to both verbal and non-verbal ways to express themselves while learning to develop their own unique voices—one word, one beat at a time.

Samba to Salsa (Music)
Assembly: Celebrate the traditions of Latin percussion with this display of Samba to Salsa’s syncopated sounds and powerful rhythms.

Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center (Music and Dance)
Assembly: The band performs and teaches Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric music La Bomba and La Plena, honoring their ancestors and heritage through practicing this preservation.

Taikoza (Music)
Roughly translated, Taiko means “big drums”—and that’s exactly what this assembly brings. Big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. Taikoza ‘s music draws from Japan’s rich tradition of performance to create a highly visual performance. With colorful traditional costumes and dynamic motion.

The Junk Jam Band
The Junk Jam Band is a high energy, interactive, and educational group. Using found objects and homemade instruments, they deliver messages of environmental awareness, social responsibility, and recycling.

Cajón (box drum): Heartbeat of Africa in Peru & The Americas Professional Learning
Teaching Artist: Hector Morales
This program is designed to introduce educators (K-12) to the fascinating history, culture, and rhythmical magic of the cajón (box drum). Participants will learn to play the main rhythms of Afro-Peruvian music as well as typical songs that will be easy to learn by Spanish as well as non-Spanish speakers.

Engaging Brain Based Music, Rhythm and Movement Strategies for Classroom Management and Social Emotional Learning & Literacy
Teaching Artist: Mary Knysh
This professional learning workshop provides educators with fun and engaging rhythm and music activities designed to support classroom management and Social-Emotional Learning. Based upon neuroscience and research, these accessible and sequential activities encourage positive group relationships, active listening, and mindfulness.

The Art of Playing Together
Teaching Artist: Hector Morales
In this professional learning workshop educators will enhance their abilities, skills, and repertoire to create culturally inclusive learning environments through the exploration of “percussion of the world.” World percussion is a fundamental guiding principle that teaching artist Hector Morales calls “The Art Of Playing Together.”
