Assembly: The ensemble brings the rich African-influenced rhythms and dances originating in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, a region known for customs deeply rooted in the traditions and spirituality of ancestral Africa.
David Gonzalez (Theater)
Assemblies: A variety of energetic storytelling assemblies. His assembly, Cuentos: Tales from the Latinx World paints a vivid picture of the people and rich cultures of the Spanish-speaking world with colorful tales from the Caribbean, South America, Spain, and the Bronx.
Hector Morales (Music)
Workshops and assemblies available that focus on percussion. These programs immerse participants to in the rhythmical magic of the cajón (box drum) and become acquainted with its fascinating history.
Leigh Robertson (Dance)
This workshop gives students the opportunity to participate in all aspects of capoeira while simultaneously promoting an active, healthy lifestyle.
Liliana Attar (Dance)
In this workshop, Liliana shares stories from several Latin American countries infused with dance and music, and she introduces students to cultures of Latin America while encouraging awareness, appreciation, and respect for different cultures. Students expand their cultural knowledge while learning to tell Latin American tales through movement.
Workshop: Packed with social and emotional learning, this residency offers children from different backgrounds or neighborhoods a space and a way to bridge cultural and linguistic barriers using Latin dance as the messenger!
Mexico Beyond Mariachi (Music and Dance)
Mexico Beyond Mariachi offers a workshop and assembly program. Both explore and expand your students’ perceptions of Mexico through the artists’ use of pre-colonial instruments and traditional interpretations of music and dance.

Samba to Salsa (Music)
Assembly: Celebrate the traditions of Latin percussion with this display of Samba to Salsa’s syncopated sounds and powerful rhythms.
Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center (Music and Dance)
Assembly: The band performs and teaches Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric music La Bomba and La Plena, honoring their ancestors and heritage through practicing this preservation.
Teatro SEA (Theatre)
Assembly: Experience history come to life. Teatro SEA brings you an amazing bilingual performance exploring the life and history of the great Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. “The Colors of Frida” (Los Colores de Frida) is performed in Spanish and English and combines storytelling, music, visual arts, puppets, and audience participation. Cajón (box drum): Heartbeat of Africa in Peru & The Americas Professional Learning
Teaching Artist: Hector Morales
This program is designed to introduce educators (K-12) to the fascinating history, culture, and rhythmical magic of the cajón (box drum). Participants will learn to play the main rhythms of Afro-Peruvian music as well as typical songs that will be easy to learn by Spanish as well as non-Spanish speakers.
Creating a Multicultural Arts-Rich Classroom
Teaching Artist: Liliana Attar
In this workshop the art forms of storytelling, dance, poetry, and music will help educators to bring the culture and language of students into the curriculum. By altering classroom artifacts, daily rituals, and frequently used stories to reflect the first language(s) and culture(s) of students, educators design classroom environments that more intentionally reflect and affirm the lived experiences of students and their caregivers.
Sound Stories
Teaching Artist: Alex Shaw
This professional learning session provides a dynamic exploration of the sonic spaces and rhythmic worlds in which we inhabit through deep listening, sensory play, and hands-on collaborative learning. Educators will experience guided deep listening exercises and be invited to consider the many ways we make meaning of the sounds around us.
The Fundamentals of Puerto Rican Folkloric Music: la Bomba y la Plena
Artist: Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center
This workshop, taught in both Spanish and English, provides educators with a fundamental understanding of Afro-Puerto Rican dance and drum culture through the rich musical heritage of Bomba y Plena. Educators will engage with Bomba y Plena’s history and culture and gain insight into how it is used to nourish resistance, healing, and community celebrations.
