Young Audiences Arts for Learning Celebrates Michele Russo’s 10 Years of Leadership

Young Audiences Arts for Learning (YA) recognized Michele Russo, President and CEO, for her decade of outstanding leadership and her unwavering dedication as a champion of arts education. Under her guidance, YA has expanded reach and impact, bringing transformative arts experiences to thousands of students and communities.

During her tenure, Russo has led initiatives that broaden access to arts education, foster innovative programming, and strengthen partnerships with schools and artists. Her vision and commitment have been instrumental in solidifying Young Audiences’ position as the leading arts education resource in the region, enriching the lives of thousands of children.

“Thank you, Michele, for your leadership. Our goal is to create safe places that are diverse, equitable, and inclusive of all our students. Kudos to Michele on 10 years, and we can’t wait for the next 10,” said Stacy Mattia, Board Chair.

Most notably, Russo championed the creation of “Arts United” in 2017 – the organization’s comprehensive diversity, equity, access, and inclusion framework. This initiative has thoughtfully and intentionally transformed every aspect of Young Audiences’ work, ensuring all programming, leadership, and operations are examined through this vital lens.

Key highlights under Michele Russo’s leadership include:

2017: Led the 45th Anniversary campaign that raised over $450,000.
2018: Launched the “United We Create” initiative, addressing religious-based bias and bullying; awarded PACF’s All Kids Thrive program to address chronic absenteeism.
2019: Oversaw the organization’s second-largest donation, a $700,000 bequest from Gerda Kelly.
2020: Expertly guided the organization through the pandemic, swiftly pivoting to online programming and ensuring continued financial support for teaching artists and staff.
2023: Successfully led the 50th-anniversary campaign, raising $5 million.
2024: Expanded Eastern Pennsylvania programming by establishing a strong presence in Philadelphia.
