Young Audiences in partnership with Salome Ureña Elementary School received an Inclusive Healthy Communities grant from the Division of Disability Services, New Jersey Department of Human Services. This grant is providing Young Audiences programs as a catalyst to advance inclusive arts experiences. See dates below for artists who are partnering with your school.
“Students participate in community experiences, are validated by classmates and teachers, and feel a sense of community”
Plena drumming (and singing) is collective by nature. The syncopation of the rhythms fosters collective artistic expression especially since the rhythms/roles are interdependent. When I sound good, you sound good. And as we put on a final culminating event, students at Salomé Ureña will not only participate in a community experience but will be validated by their schoolmates and teachers in doing so.
“Students experience creativity, self-expression, and new areas in which to excel”
The drumming patterns that we can share in a short residency are repetition, stops and starts. When we come across a student that flourishes on the drum, creative self-expression is possible. All students will contribute to a song’s chorus or verses we can promote and integrate other forms of self-expression as well.
