Through visual and oral storytelling students gain perspective and context about contemporary Native peoples. The continuum of learning prioritizes the importance that Indigenous peoples are still here, are evolving, and are thriving today. Joy Tonepahhote (Kiowa) a Plains beadworker whose works have been shown at the Heye Center of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian will lead students in a beaded jewelry workshop. Participants will complete a simple beadwork project that connects to ensuring accurate and inclusive representation of Indigenous people. Participants will consider how design, graphing, shape and color patterns, symmetry length and width, measurement, addition, and subtraction are incorporated into  the beadwork creative process. Different types of beads and beadwork projects are possible depending on residency length.
