Baba Bomani introduces himself as a Hip Hop MC, whose number one job is to brag about himself and his community, with the song “My Name Is…”. Next, Baba Bomani traces his artistic lineage through his African heritage. Interpolating Scot Joplin’s classic, “The Entertainer”, Baba Bomani explains the history of popular music in the 20th century with the song “The Black Entertainer”. Participants are then introduced to Frederick Douglass beginning with how he stole his education, using his literacy to escape slavery. Douglass tells this story in his autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of a Slave, and Baba Bomani remixes this story into his song “Fit to be a Slave”. Baba Bomani then uses rhythm, rhyme and repetition to teach students this secret to making songs, “The Writing Process”. In promoting the cause of abolition Douglass becomes the most photographed American of the 19th century, a fact catalogued in the book “Picturing Frederick Douglass” and remixed into Baba Bomani’s song “Selfie King”. Though one of the worlds most recognized public figures, Douglass was used to the limelight, but he got off to a humble and nervous start. To encourage participants to face their fear of sharing their voice, Baba Bomani retells Douglass’ story of his first major speech and the community that got him prepared for it with the song “Speak for Me”. Now that they’re fired up and ready to go, Baba Bomani gets them loose and ready to create with his song “Three Rules of Creative Writing”. Douglass goes on to travel the world using his words to fight for the abolition of slavery. Baba Bomani describes the three ways Douglass uses words to change the world in his song “Rhetoric, just like Frederick”.
