A Writer’s Journey
Description
Daryl Cobb will take the kids on a journey that is so much fun, that the kids won’t realize until it’s over, that the whole assembly was one giant writing class.
“A Writer’s Journey” is filled with excitement. It is an amazing mix of music, storytelling and graphics all weaved together to teach children about the creative writing process.
- Daryl combines music and graphics to teach kids how to collect details.
- He uses storytelling and graphics to teach them about using small moments and creating conflict.
- He uses theatrical skits to teach them about conflict and story resolution, and the importance of thinking out their stories.
The audience will be actively involved in the program.
- They will become problem solvers.
- They will help pick out details.
- Someone will become an actor or actress during the skit, “The Cookie Caper”.
- They will be engaged with movement, with dialogue, and visuals.
Daryl’s success as a star baseball player and his struggles in school, with ADHD and being bullied, all add to the powerful message of this program.
- Daryl steps back into his acting shoes for a powerful monologue from “Baseball, Bullies & Angels”. The message of the chapter helps kids to understand there are ways they can get a bullying issue resolved, and that there is a right and wrong way to do it.
- This monologue stays on point and shows the students how life experiences helped him write this amazing story.
- “Baseball” is usually performed for grades 3-4 and up. And swapped out with Daryl’s readers’ theater version of “Do Pirates Go to School?” for grades 2 and 3 combinations.
More about the program
The message of using our life experiences stands out brightest and is a consistent theme of the show. Daryl shows everyone how he creates, and how those life experiences are applied in his work.
Once the students see and experience how Daryl intertwines his life into his work, they will understand the concept and how to apply their experiences to their stories. At that point they can go back to class and use it to develop vivid details, characters, plots, and settings.
