Latin Rhythms is a dynamic percussion residency designed to introduce students to the rhythmic foundations of Latin American music while fostering creativity, collaboration, and cultural understanding. Throughout the residency, students begin by learning essential rhythmic building blocks, the foundational patterns that shape many Latin genres. Through immersive, hands-on instruction, they internalize pulse, subdivision, syncopation, and ensemble awareness.
The program’s design builds skills progressively, ensuring that every student, regardless of prior experience, can confidently participate and contribute. As their confidence grows, students layer complementary rhythms and discover how individual parts interlock to form complete musical textures. Drawing from traditions across the Caribbean and South America, students explore how geography, history, and cultural exchange shape musical identity. They engage directly with authentic Latin percussion instruments and examine how rhythm functions not only as artistic expression but also as a powerful form of community building.
