What is a workshop or residency?

  • Artists come to your school and work with small groups of up to 25 students in 45-minute intervals
  • Artists work with 3-4 Classes per day
  • Workshops and residencies can be one day or 20, and they normally culminate in a performance or piece of art for the school community.
  • Workshop sessions are customized to work within your school’s schedule.

Some workshops require materials. Materials fees are listed in the program details. All workshops and residencies have a $95 per day travel fee.

    • Students use their bodies to create hip-hop infused rhythms through call and response patterns and foundational step choreography.

    • Students will amaze themselves as they learn basic moves and create their own choreography by exploring the American art form of breakdancing with Hip Hop Fundamentals.
  • Rhythm: The Lost Language with Maurice Chestnut
    • Students will learn the language of rhythm from acclaimed tap dancer and choreographer Maurice Chestnut.
  • Speak Up Residency with SOLE Defined
    • Through this residency, participants dive into themes of justice and civil rights while embodying collaboration, teamwork and learning the importance of John Lewis’ “Good Trouble.”

    • In this provocative workshop with Rebecca Kelly, students reflect on symbols of the Holocaust, creating their own poetry and art in response.
  • Lessons in Tolerance with Patricia Flynn
    • Lessons in Tolerance is an examination of the causes and social costs of the Holocaust, and other examples of genocide and persecution, followed by the development of positive artistic and intellectual responses to these events.
  • Making Books: Tell Me a Story… Tell me Your Story with Molly Gaston Johnson
    • Through a series of exercises leading to the creation of hand-made books, students use the elements and principles of design to create compelling images in the way that a writer uses letters and words to compose stories and poems.

    • Latin Rhythms is an engaging, hands-on percussion residency where students explore the foundational rhythms of Latin America while building creativity, collaboration, and cultural awareness through ensemble music-making.

  • A Taste of Mosaic with Gail Scuderi
    • After learning about the history, students will participate in a hands-on experience of creating a small “Picassiette” style of mosaic using a variety of ceramic and glass tile.
  • SEL Murals and Mosaics with Kate Marie Sclavi
    • Collaborate with a school-wide or class-wide project to create a school mural or mosaic! The teaching artist leads students in a collaborative process to design a mural, and then paint a cohesive design, or construct a mosaic.

Photography

  • ERACISM: Erasing Visual Racism with Erik James Montgomery
    • Stereotypical images have negatively impacted the self-esteem of people for hundreds of years. The class will examine how these negative images are used in media, cartoons, and in art.
  • Exposures: Old and New School Photography with Erik James Montgomery
    • Students will create unique images and explore the myriad possible approaches to this expressive art form.

Film, TV and Animation

  • It’s Alive! Stop Motion Animation with Box of Light
    • Participants sculpt or build stop-motion characters and sets, and build films together while developing their media literacy, visual arts, ELA and social skills.
  • Let’s Get Animated: 2D Digital Animation Studio with Rashad Malik Davis
    • In this beginner’s animation course, students learn the basics of 2D animation using some of the 9 principles established by classic Disney animators.

Painting, Drawing and Paper Art

  • Branching Patterns in Nature with Karen Fuchs
    • Branching patterns can be found throughout the natural world- from leaf veins and root systems, to coral, mineral dendrites, and a single brain neuron. This workshop will focus on these beautiful, efficient and energy-transmitting forms.
  • Fun with Fractions: Math is Beautiful with Molly Gaston Johnson
    • Connections to world cultures are made to demonstrate that math has been at the foundation of art and culture for millennia.

    • This workshop provides students with a fundamental understanding of painting, exploring its physical characteristics and expressive capabilities.

    •  In this comics studio, students learn the basics of comic storytelling – both written and visual – to bring a sequential story to life.
  • Paint Your Feelings with Music and Poetry with April Zay
    • Students will build their personal artistry by creating original artwork inspired by a piece of music or a poem.
  • Paper Quilling with April Zay
    • Originating in 17th-century Europe, paper quilling is the art of rolling, shaping, and gluing thin strips of paper together to make complex designs.
  • Self-Expression Through Self-Portraits with Tchin
    • Internationally known, multi award-winning Indigenous artist Tchin will guide participants through the artistic process, allowing them time to reconnect with their inner selves and come away with a powerful expression of their voice.

3D Art, Sculpture and Textiles

  • Beadwork: Connecting to Community with Joy Tonepahhote (New teaching artist!)
    • Students complete a beadwork project that they can share with their classrooms, guided by We Are the Seeds’ Indigenous educators.
  • Gargoyles: From Gothic to Grotesque with Rebecca Kelly
    • Students create gargoyles using pinch-pot construction and basic hand-building pottery techniques. A storyteller recounts medieval legends and contemporary children’s fiction that inspire the students to write and perform their own myths based on their gargoyle creations.
  • The Joy of Puppets with Molly Gaston Johnson
    • A 4-Day experience of creating and storytelling with puppets, focusing on developing social-emotional skills.
  • The Stories of Quilts and Creativity with Steven H. Hobbs
    • Students will learn the history of quilts and then make a small project that emphasizes personalizing their quilt square.
  • Upcycled Collaborative Weaving with Kate Marie Sclavi
    • Collaborate to make a giant woven tapestry using upcycled materials! This program can be school-wide or class-wide, students will work together on giant looms to construct a collaborative weaving using upcycled materials: old t-shirts, sheets, and even plastic bags!

Unique Art Experiences

  • Silkscreen a Screen with Molly Gaston Johnson
    • Students learn simple silkscreen printmaking as they create a collaborative piece based on the silhouettes of plants, animals, and shapes.
